The Guysborough Community Health Board has been busy the last few weeks presenting the collaborative community health plan to the District of the Municipality of Guysborough, led by Chairperson Mary Desmond. Desmond explained the collaborative community health plan is an undertaking by CHBs of Guysborough County, Antigonish Town and County and Strait Richmond for 2017 – 2019. The boards, through community consultations and surveys, identified four priorities:

  • Poverty
  • Early Child Development
  • Food Security, and
  • Social Inclusion

During the presentation with the Municipality of Guysborough, Warden Pitts and councillors received the plan positively. Deputy Warden Shelia Pelly stated some of the initiatives have already been in place. Desmond acknowledged Guysborough’s initiatives but stated, “There is room for improvement,” and Warden Vernon Pitts agreed.

Councillor Janet Peitsche was excited and interested and decided to submit an application to become a member of the health board. The following week, the board presented to the Municipality of Mulgrave, where Mayor Hadley and Councillor Shelia Brophy requested to join the Health Board. Mulgrave community is not represented on the Community Health Board. They were excited, and their excitement turned over into a commitment.

Two days later the board presented to St. Mary’s Council and gave Warden Michael Mosher and councillors the collaborative community health plan. The councillors asked questions on the Wellness Funding, which is one of the CHB’s main initiatives. There was a discussion about the Nova Scotia Chronic Disease Innovation Fund. This fund is available to initiate innovative projects that directly improve the health of persons with chronic diseases or a risk of developing chronic diseases.

The Guysborough CHB will be holding its regular monthly meeting the second Wednesday of each month. In an effort to recruit more board membership, the board is hosting its meetings in communities which aren’t currently represented by a resident on the board.
